SUMMARY:Concerts on the Pier featuring Jack Burns
DESCRIPTION:The Concerts on the Pier returns in Summer 2023 as a concert series.  The third concert of the series is Saturday\, August 12th at 7:30 pm on Lake Tillery\, near Goat Island (the last cove before the southern dam on the Stanly County side of the lake) and will feature Jack Burns.  People can listen to the free concert from their boats\, from shore\, or by watching the live stream on the Stanly County Arts Council’s Facebook page. If interested in shore seating\, please email the Stanly County Arts Council at stanlycountyartscouncil1974@gmail.com or text Renee VanHorn @ 704.984.8357. \nJack Burns is a 23-year-old singer/songwriter/musician from New London\, North Carolina. He has been playing music since he was eight\, starting on drums and piano\, then on to guitar\, bass\, and other instruments. During his high school years\, he began playing at bars and open mics locally and in some areas of Charlotte and High Point. At the age of 19\, he began recording his first studio album entitled “Nowhere & 19” which was released in the fall of 2021. He wrote and played all parts of this debut album\, and also produced the songs himself. He is currently in the final stages of recording his second album\, which he is even more excited about than the first.  His genre ranges from pop\, funk\, and blues\, to some rock with a taste of country occasionally.  He currently plays out at a variety of small venues\, including wineries\, local bars\, and private parties\, and is eager to expand into the greater markets. You can check out his upcoming performances on his Facebook page (Jack Burns- band/musician) and also listen to his album on Apple Music\, Spotify\, and other streaming platforms. \nClick here to watch Jack perform Jen:  Jack Burns performs Jen \nConcert on the Pier is the brainchild of Austin Coats. When the Covid pandemic hit\, Coats returned to Stanly County from New York City. In Fall 2020\, Coats determined that performing from a pier for boats or for an audience socially distanced on shore would meet the needs to hear live music while being performed in a safe environment.  The first Concert on the Pier occurred on a chilly night in October 2020 with Coats performing and raising much-needed funds for the local arts community by having donations benefit the Stanly County Arts Council. He followed that concert with another concert in May 2021\, with much better weather and once again the funds raised benefited the Stanly County Arts Council.  Even though restrictions no longer exist\, the Concert on the Pier is still a great way to enjoy live music.  In Summer 2022\, it expanded to a three-concert series\, offering other local talents to grace the pier. \nThe Concert Series for Summer 2023\, will also include: \n\nJuly 15th with The Hatley’s (being rescheduled for September 2023)\nAugust 12th with Jack Burns\nSeptember 9th with Joy Almond\n\nEach musician has their own style\, so it’ll be fun to attend all four concerts.  Donations will be accepted again on behalf of the Stanly County Arts Council\, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit whose mission is to encourage and promote broad-based cultural and educational activities in the arts throughout Stanly County.

SUMMARY:Concerts on the Pier featuring Joy Almond
DESCRIPTION:The Concerts on the Pier returns in Summer 2023 as a concert series.  The final concert of the series is Saturday\, September 9th at 7:30 pm on Lake Tillery\, near Goat Island (the last cove before the southern dam on the Stanly County side of the lake) and will feature Joy Almond. \nSinger/songwriter Joy Almond has been entertaining the Charlotte metro area for the past couple of decades\, bringing original and cover songs to life with powerhouse vocals. \nAlmond got her start performing with her father’s country/southern rock band\, Different Directions\, while a student at Pfeiffer University. During her time at Pfeiffer\, Almond was also a member of the college’s Symphonic Choir. \nIn the late 90’s\, Almond moved on to Blues/R&B group Fat Cabbage\, playing shows across the Piedmont\, including the legendary Double Door Inn-Charlotte. She also earned accolades as the winner of Albemarle Idol and as a contestant on WSOC’s ‘Gimme the Mike-Charlotte’ in the early 2000’s. \nAlmond’s vocal style is heavily influenced by revered R&B singers such as Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Comparisons to her sound lean towards ‘blue-eyed soul’ altos such as Adele\, Amy Winehouse\, and Teena Marie. Almond is also known for her method of playing left-handed rhythm guitar. \nCurrently\, Almond performs regularly at Open Mic Night hosted by Rick Scaffe at Uwharrie Brewing on Wednesdays\, and as half of the acoustic duo Joy and the Gent with long-time guitarist and friend George Blalock. For future performances\, follow ‘Joy and the Gent’ on Facebook and Instagram. \nConcert on the Pier is the brainchild of Austin Coats. SUMMARY:Stanly County Concert Association presents Paul and Sophia: 2 Pianos\, 4 Hands\, 2 Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Paul Chandley is from the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. A child prodigy\, he could read music notes before he could read words. Sophia Pavlenko\, born in Siberia and raised in Kiev\, Ukraine\, was also a child prodigy who wrote her first composition at age 5. Consummate solo performers\, they met when the Kiev Symphony and Chorus lost one of its U.S. venues and substituted a performance in the small North Carolina town where Paul was director of the Trinity Music Academy. It was love at first sight. Sophia spoke little English\, Paul spoke no Russian\, but according to Sophia\, “When we met\, we connected on a musical/emotional level.” “Music crosses all cultural boundaries\,” explains Paul\, “and speaks directly to the heart. Playing with Sophia the first time was the most fun I’ve ever had.” \n\n\nVISIT THEIR WEBSITE\n\n\n\n\nAfter a year’s international courtship\, they married and their future as a piano duo was sealed. Paul and Sophia have been delighting audiences for the past 18 years with their own arrangements from Classical Favorites to Ragtime\, along with Sophia’s dynamic original compositions. The sounds that floats from their two pianos have been called “virtuosic\, beautiful\, very approachable\, very listenable.” Their enthusiasm radiates across the footlights to the audience. \nThe couple launched The Paul and Sophia Music Foundation in February 2017\, to support\, educate and nurture a new generation of musicians. \n\nThis is the fourth of five concerts of the 2023-2024 Stanly County Concert Association’s concert season. The last concert in series is: \nMarch 23\, 2024 @ 7:30 pm – The Extraordinaires \nAll concerts are held at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center\, 26032 Newt Rd\, Albemarle\, NC 28001. \nFor season membership or single ticket information\, please visit the website of the Stanly County Concert Association. \n\n

SUMMARY:Charleston's Lowcountry Voices presents "Black Broadway"
DESCRIPTION:The Stanly County Arts Council is excited to welcome back to Stanly County The Lowcountry Voices.  Come enjoy the sounds of Charleston with a free performance by Lowcountry Voices. This concert is a gift to the community by the Stanly County Arts Council in celebration of our 50th Anniversary!  Donations for the arts will be accepted at the door. \nLowcountry Voices debuted “Black Broadway” last May at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston. \nLOWCOUNTRY VOICES (LCV) is a community performing arts organization based in North Charleston but drawing members from across the region. LCV performs all genres in the choral repertoire with a special emphasis on African-American music\, including Black gospel\, spirituals and jazz\, as they were nurtured and performed in the SC Lowcountry. While the choir is based in North Charleston since its inception 10 years ago\, its members are drawn from across the entire Lowcountry region and as far away as Rock Hill and Columbia\, SC. LCV has ignited audiences locally and regionally as well as in New York\, New Jersey and Georgia. \nLowcountry Voices was honored to be asked to provide music for the nationally televised funeral services for the Honorable Reverend Clementa Pinckney\, the slain pastor of the Mother Emanuel AME Church tragedy. Additionally\, the choir was also honored to provide the background singing behind President Obama’s surprising and touching rendition of Amazing Grace. In July\, 2015\, LCV took the sounds of the Lowcountry internationally to Bermuda for two enthusiastically received performances.  Also in July\, Lowcountry Voices performed with music legend James Taylor in Columbia\, SC. The choir later traveled on tour to Toronto\, Canada. \nThe choir was honored to perform for the Charleston Gaillard Center’s Grand Re-Opening with noted gospel artist\, Karen Clark-Sheard. Most recently the choir performed for a capacity audience during 2022 Piccolo Spoleto\, and collaborated with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra for the Denmark Vesey Celebration this\npast July. \nNathan L Nelson Music Director LowCountry Voices\nLowcountry Voices is directed by NATHAN L NELSON.  Nelson is the Founding Director of Lowcountry Voices and continues to pursue his passion for preserving the cultural legacy and authenticity of African-American music. A native Charlestonian\, he began playing drums at age eight and by age thirteen\, he was organizing and directing local gospel and school choirs. From 2008 through 2012\, he was the Director of the CSO Spiritual Ensemble and Associate Director of the CSO Gospel Choir. He is called upon to conduct choral clinics for church musicians\, choral groups\, and orchestras and also helps initialize and enhance church music departments. He has conducted and performed in Canada\, England and Ghana\, West Africa\, and has mesmerized sold out audiences throughout the Southeast. He has collaborated with several outstanding artists in the field of gospel and spiritual music. Mr. Nelson\, a well-regarded public school music educator and administrator\, continues to work in the public education field. Mr. Nelson holds a BA Degree in Music Education with an emphasis on Choral Music and Secondary Education from Charleston Southern University and an MS Degree in Educational Leadership. \nLCV is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and is a fully registered charity in the State of South Carolina.
