SUMMARY:An Evening with Mike Wiley
DESCRIPTION:The Stanly County Historical Society\, in partnership with the Stanly County Arts Council and the America 250 Stanly County Committee\, proudly presents a powerful evening of theatre and history. An Evening with Mike Wiley features his acclaimed one-man performance\, One Noble Journey: The Box Marked Freedom.\nJoin us on Thursday\, September 25 at 7:00 PM at The Albemarle Neighborhood Theatre\, 219 N. Third Street\, Downtown Albemarle for a compelling portrayal of courage\, resilience\, and the enduring pursuit of freedom. \nNationally acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley brings to life the extraordinary true story of Henry “Box” Brown\, an enslaved man who escaped to freedom in 1849 by mailing himself in a wooden crate from Richmond\, Virginia\, to Philadelphia. Through gripping storytelling and dramatic performance\, Wiley immerses the audience in Brown’s harrowing journey—shedding light on the horrors of slavery and the strength of the human spirit.\nThis one-man show is more than just theatre—it’s an opportunity to reflect on our shared history as we approach the 250th anniversary of American independence.\nMike Wiley holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has served as the Lehman Brady Visiting Joint Chair Professor in Documentary Studies and American Studies at both Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was awarded the UNC Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017.\nIn 2020\, Wiley received the Ann Atwater Award from the Manbites Dog Theater Fund\, honoring his commitment to social justice through the arts. His accolades also include the NC Theatre Conference Constance Welsh Award for Theatre for Youth\, and his plays have been featured at arts industry conferences across North America. \nIn addition to his theatrical work\, Wiley is an Assistant Research Professor in the Kenan Institute for Ethics and the Program in Education at Duke University. He also co-directs America’s Hallowed Ground\, a Kenan Institute project that blends historical research with the arts to honor underrecognized sites of racial and historical significance in the U.S. Admission is free\, and all community members are encouraged to attend. Seating is first-come\, first-served.\nDon’t miss this unforgettable evening celebrating African American history\, personal bravery\, and the enduring legacy of freedom.

SUMMARY:Concerts on the Pier featuring Joy Almond
DESCRIPTION:The Concerts on the Pier returns in Summer 2023 as a concert series.  The final concert of the series is Saturday\, September 9th at 7:30 pm on Lake Tillery\, near Goat Island (the last cove before the southern dam on the Stanly County side of the lake) and will feature Joy Almond.  People can listen to the free concert from their boats\, from shore\, or by watching the live stream on the Stanly County Arts Council’s Facebook page. If interested in shore seating\, please email the Stanly County Arts Council at stanlycountyartscouncil1974@gmail.com or text Renee VanHorn @ 704.984.8357. \nSinger/songwriter Joy Almond has been entertaining the Charlotte metro area for the past couple of decades\, bringing original and cover songs to life with powerhouse vocals. \nAlmond got her start performing with her father’s country/southern rock band\, Different Directions\, while a student at Pfeiffer University. During her time at Pfeiffer\, Almond was also a member of the college’s Symphonic Choir. \nIn the late 90’s\, Almond moved on to Blues/R&B group Fat Cabbage\, playing shows across the Piedmont\, including the legendary Double Door Inn-Charlotte. She also earned accolades as the winner of Albemarle Idol and as a contestant on WSOC’s ‘Gimme the Mike-Charlotte’ in the early 2000’s. \nAlmond’s vocal style is heavily influenced by revered R&B singers such as Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Comparisons to her sound lean towards ‘blue-eyed soul’ altos such as Adele\, Amy Winehouse\, and Teena Marie. Almond is also known for her method of playing left-handed rhythm guitar. \nCurrently\, Almond performs regularly at Open Mic Night hosted by Rick Scaffe at Uwharrie Brewing on Wednesdays\, and as half of the acoustic duo Joy and the Gent with long-time guitarist and friend George Blalock. For future performances\, follow ‘Joy and the Gent’ on Facebook and Instagram. \nConcert on the Pier is the brainchild of Austin Coats. When the Covid pandemic hit\, Coats returned to Stanly County from New York City. In Fall 2020\, Coats determined that performing from a pier for boats or for an audience socially distanced on shore would meet the needs to hear live music while being performed in a safe environment.  The first Concert on the Pier occurred on a chilly night in October 2020 with Coats performing and raising much-needed funds for the local arts community by having donations benefit the Stanly County Arts Council. He followed that concert with another concert in May 2021\, with much better weather and once again the funds raised benefited the Stanly County Arts Council.  Even though restrictions no longer exist\, the Concert on the Pier is still a great way to enjoy live music.  In Summer 2022\, it expanded to a three-concert series\, offering other local talents to grace the pier. \nThe Concert Series for Summer 2023 includes: \n\nJune 3rd with Austin Coats\nJuly 15th with The Hatley’s (cancelled due to weather – will be rescheduled for 2024)\nAugust 12th with Jack Burns\nSeptember 9th with Joy Almond\n\nEach musician has their own style\, so it’ll be fun to attend all four concerts.  Donations will be accepted again on behalf of the Stanly County Arts Council\, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit whose mission is to encourage and promote broad-based cultural and educational activities in the arts throughout Stanly County.

SUMMARY:Concerts on the Pier featuring The Hatleys - CANCELED due to the weather... will be rescheduled for FALL 2023!!
DESCRIPTION:The Concerts on the Pier returns in Summer 2023 as a concert series.  The second concert of the series is Saturday\, July 15th at 7:30 pm on Lake Tillery\, near Goat Island (the last cove before the southern dam on the Stanly County side of the lake) and will feature The Hatleys.  People can listen to the free concert from their boats\, from shore\, or by watching the live stream on the Stanly County Arts Council’s Facebook page. The bluegrass/gospel group consists of a father\, his four children\, and one daughter-in-law. \nPatriarch\, 86-year-old Ervin Hatley\, has been playing the fiddle for over half a century and continues to perform when able. His three sons\, Gary\, Ronnie\, and Donnie\, play guitar\, banjo\, and mandolin/fiddle respectively\, while daughter\, Teresa\, joins in on bass and Gary’s wife\, Sandy (from Seagrove)\, adds dobro on some numbers. \nGrowing up singing a cappella in church\, the group is known for their tight four-part harmony. The group specializes in bluegrass gospel\, but also offers toe tapping instrumentals and familiar bluegrass standards. \nThe family began playing when the two oldest boys were teenagers. Competing in area fiddlers’ conventions and band contests\, they were frequent winners. As their popularity spread and the younger siblings joined in\, they started performing for festivals\, concert halls\, and churches. They have appeared across the southeast from West Virginia to Mississippi. \nBrother\, Ronnie\, owns Ron’s Pickin’ Parlor\, where he and sister\, Teresa\, teach instrumental and vocal lessons full-time. The business also offers the finest selection of professional bluegrass instruments in the region\, with stocking dealerships for brands including Collings\, Martin\, Sullivan\, Deering\, Blueridge\, Shen\, Eastman\, and Beard. \nThis year\, the Hatleys celebrate 43 years performing together as a family band. They have recorded four CDs\, two bluegrass gospel\, one a cappella gospel and one Bluegrass Christmas project. \nConcert on the Pier is the brainchild of Austin Coats. Since then he has performed around the world in more than 50 countries across five continents with various cruise lines as both a lead singer and dancer. He has performed works by Tony and Emmy Award winners Andy Blankenbuehler\, Mandy Moore\, and Michael Rooney and for Warren Carlyle at the Astaire Awards. As a dancer\, he has also worked with choreographers Dee Caspary\, Gustavo Vargas\, and Monica Kapoor and performed repertoire by Bob Fosse\, Twyla Tharp\, and Agnes de Mille. Professional theatre credits include Cats (Skimbleshanks)\, Anything Goes (u/s Billy)\, Mamma Mia\, and Chicago. Coats would like to thank the Stanly County Arts Council for their continued support! \nConcert on the Pier is the brainchild of Coats. \nThe Concert Series for Summer 2023\, will also include: \n\nJuly 15th with The Hatley’s\nAugust 12th with Jack Burns\nSeptember 9th with Joy Almond\n\nEach musician has their own style\, so it’ll be fun to attend all four concerts.  Donations will be accepted again on behalf of the Stanly County Arts Council\, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit whose mission is to encourage and promote broad-based cultural and educational activities in the arts throughout Stanly County.

When the Covid pandemic hit\, Coats was living in New York City. During the New York shut down\, Coats decided to return to Stanly County until Covid restrictions improved. In Fall 2020\, Coats determined that performing from a pier for boats or for an audience socially distanced on shore would meet the needs to hear live music while being performed in a safe environment.  The first Concert on the Pier occurred on a chilly night in October 2020 with Coats performing and raising much needed funds for the local arts community by having donations benefit the Stanly County Arts Council. He followed that concert with another concert in May 2021\, with much better weather and once again the funds raised benefited the Stanly County Arts Council.  Even though the pandemic is at low levels and many of the precautions are no longer necessary\, the Concert on the Pier is still a great idea to enjoy live music.  To make it even better for Summer 2022\, Coats thought it would be wonderful to have a series and have other performers take the Pier.  The first concert on June 18th featured Dustin Curlee; on July 16th\, Kate White graced the pier; and August 13th will be Austin Coats.   Each musician has their own style\, so it’ll be fun to attend all three.  Donations will be accepted again on behalf of the Stanly County Arts Council\, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit whose mission is to encourage and promote broad-based cultural and educational activities in the arts throughout Stanly County.

SUMMARY:First Bank\, Corning with the Stanly County Arts Council present The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra's "Spirit of America"
DESCRIPTION:After a two-year hiatus\, First Bank and Corning with the Stanly County Arts Council are excited to welcome back the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra to Stanly County. With this year’s concert being held just prior to Veteran’s Day\, it presented itself as a perfect opportunity to perform a patriotic concert called “Spirit of America.” The program includes familiar arrangements from Aaron Copland\, Percy Grainger\, Leroy Anderson\, John Williams\, and John Philip Sousa. \nWith our mission being “to encourage and promote broad-based cultural and educational activities in the arts throughout Stanly County” we wanted to make sure that everyone would be able to partake in this opportunity.  Our goal was to ensure that ticket prices were not cost-prohibitive.  Fortunately\, the local business community recognized the importance of this concert previously and again this year.  Their generosity ensured that financially we could afford to bring this concert to the local community.  First Bank and Corning are our Maestro (title) sponsors.  Dr. John Kilde of Charlotte Eye\, Ear\, Nose & Throat is our Concertmaster sponsor\, and our Principal sponsors include Stanly Community College\, Union Power\, and Uwharrie Bank. \nPfeiffer University is excited to be this year’s Student Ticket sponsor. This sponsorship allows any student in Stanly County from Kindergarten through seniors in high school to receive a free ticket to the performance with a paying adult.  These tickets will be made available at the schools the week of October 25 or can be downloaded and printed from the SC Arts Council website.  As part of the sponsorship\, Pfeiffer University students also receive free admission just by showing their student ID at the door. \nTicket outlets include: \nStanly County Agri-civic Center Box Office:  Monday-Friday 9 am – 4:30 pm (Cash & check only) \nFirst Bank:  Albemarle\, Locust\, Mount Pleasant\, Richfield\,  & Troy (cash & check only) \nHarris Teeter – Albemarle (available October 27-November 7th) – (Cash\, Check\, Credit Cards)
