The Mourning of Ellen: A Candlelight House Tour and the History of Victorian Mourning Rituals

Join the Stanly County Historical Society for this encore event honoring the memory of Ellen Milton Snuggs. The rooms of the 1852 Isaiah Snuggs House will be decorated as they would have been following Ellen’s untimely passing. Guests will experience Victorian mourning rituals such as draping mirrors and pictures in black, view a hair wreath and locket with Ellen’s hair on loan from the Stanly County Museum and learn other Victorian mourning superstitions & rituals. Cash donations will be accepted at the door.

Airing of the Quilts, A trunk show of the Three Rivers Quilt Guild

In the historic setting of the 1852 Isaiah W. Snuggs House, this annual show will feature quilts from The Three Rivers Quilt Guild. Airing quilts outside has a long tradition in America beginning in colonial times. Early European settlers would mark the beginning of spring by airing quilts outside following heavy use during the winter season. Local quilter Wanda Brooks will be on hand to authenticate and date your heirloom quilts and answer your quilting questions. Event is free
